Individuals Stopping Slimming Jabs Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users using these treatments need to be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to original weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Doctors propose the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts caution that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural management.
