No fewer than thirteen passengers killed and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's key government projects.

The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.

The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the year before. This venture was closely associated with his government's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The development of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were built at an rapid pace, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised significant concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party urged an urgent pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was suggested pending a thorough technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."

In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and management of these national undertakings.
